Global distinction for the HYGEIA IVF Embryogenesis Unit from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE)

The HYGEIA IVF Embryogenesis Unit, the largest and most modern Assisted Reproduction Unit in Greece, a member of Hellenic Healthcare Group, achieves a major international distinction — a global first. The Unit’s Embryology Laboratory officially becomes the first laboratory worldwide to receive certification from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) — the leading European scientific organization in the field of reproductive medicine and embryology — as an accredited Training Centre in Clinical Embryology.

At the same time, this certification is accompanied by recognition from the European Board & College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EBCOG), the official European body that oversees and ensures the standards of clinical practice and education in obstetrics and gynaecology at a European level.

This distinction demonstrates the international recognition of the laboratory’s clinical, research and educational processes, as well as of the excellence of the technological equipment and the associated infrastructure, while at the same time the prospects of the Unit’s educational activities in clinical embryology are further enhanced. As part of the evaluation process, the excellent implementation, accuracy, safety, speed and efficiency of the Unit’s procedures were assessed, as well as the adequate training of embryologists to act as educators. The certification confirms the Unit’s full specialization in reproductive medicine in accordance with European standards, evaluating the level of knowledge, the quality of technical skills, and the ability to comply with ethical guidelines.

Mr. Ioannis Sfontouris, Director of the Embryology Laboratory of the Unit, stated: “The certification by ESHRE and the recognition by EBCOG constitute a particularly important international distinction, confirming the high quality of our Unit’s laboratory and clinical procedures, as well as the level of training and scientific competence of the team. The evaluation was based on strict European standards, further strengthening our commitment to the implementation of evidence-based practices and the continuous improvement of embryological techniques, aiming at optimal patient care and the development of Clinical Embryology.”

Mr. Evangelos Makrakis, Scientific Director of the HYGEIA IVF Embryogenesis Unit, stated: “This international represents a significant confirmation of the scientific excellence and systematic effort undertaken by our Unit. The recognition by ESHRE and EBCOG demonstrates the high level of our clinical, research and educational activities. We remain committed to continuous development of modern Assisted Reproduction, investing in knowledge, research, innovation and education”.

The CEO of the HYGEIA IVF Embryogenesis Unit, Mr. Stavros Sougioultzis, stated: “This international recognition is a special honour for the Unit and confirms our strategic choice to systematically invest in quality, education and innovation. Our goal is to continue to pioneer in the field of assisted reproduction, offering high-level services and actively contributing to the shaping of European standards in the sector”.
